Inefficient cooling system raising operating costs in Hollywood Studio’s data center

//Inefficient cooling system raising operating costs in Hollywood Studio’s data center

Challenge:
With a PUE of more than 2.0, this major motion picture studio needed to revamp its HVAC system to increase energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.

Solution:
Although the studio had requested a combination of hard and soft containment, after a single site visit, we realized the physical characteristics of the data center made it the perfect environment to institute a recently released active heat containment chimney system – a solution the studio’s data center managers had not been aware of until then.

Our solutions also included an updated system that uses temperature and pressure sensors to intelligently control fan speeds and exhaust hot air through the chimneys at the most efficient rate. The data center reduced power usage by more than 950,000 KWH per year and achieved its goal of reducing PUE to 1.7 or better.
